ISWP Hybrid Training of Trainers successfully completed in Thailand

RICD Wheelchair Project and ISWP successfully completed a wheelchair hybrid training of trainers program in Chiang Mai, Thailand for a group of 8 participants (6 from Thailand and 2 from Myanmar). Participants completed ISWP Wheelchair Trainer Series online course over a course of 4-weeks before attending a 2-day in-person workshop in July 2023. Learn more about ISWP online courses.

World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) and ISWP signed a Memoradum of Understanding

WFOT and ISWP have formed a relationship for the purpose of increasing equitable global access to wheelchair products and services. The Parties will collaborate to promote access to affordable and appropriate wheelchair products and services through the development and implementation of strategies of activities.

Meet the new ISWP Executive Director

Our founding board of directors has named Alexander Kamadu as its new executive director. Kamadu will be leading the organization as it establishes itself as a separate non-profit organization after seven years as a USAID grant-funded project at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. Kamadu will be based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Kamadu succeeds Jon Pearlman and Mary Goldberg, who have served as co-directors of the society while it was part of the University of Pittsburgh. David Constantine MBE, ISWP founding board chair, who led the executive director search, states, “Hiring Alex Kamadu as ISWP’s first executive director is a major step forward for launching an independent ISWP and for the global wheelchair sector.”

ISWP and ATscale co-hosted a stakeholders meeting

ISWP and ATscale reviewed progress, priorities, & opportunities for coordination on October 25, 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland, with 20 participants from 15 organizations across the #wheelchair sector. New initiatives on increased collaboration and data sharing were explored. A report will be circulated in the coming months.

WHO, ISWP and ISPO co-hosted the new Wheelchair Provision Guidelines meeting

An in-person meeting was held with the Global Wheelchair Service Standards Group in Geneva, Switzerland, October 26, 2022, to present the zero draft document and invite feedback. The group will continue to work to finalize the document with a goal to launch at the ISPO World Congress in April 2023.

ISWP Virtual Basic Training in September

Following the success of our first virtual Basic training held in conjunction with ISPO’s Global Educators Meeting (GEM) in May-June 2022, we are holding the next virtual Basic training – open to everyone in the sector – in September 2022 (Dates to be confirmed).

Clinicians, technicians, students and community workers who are partly or fully involved in wheelchair service provision are encouraged to participate. The basic wheelchair training will be completely virtual, with online theory classes in the weeks before the actual workshop. All the trainees will then complete the requirements to receive the ISWP Wheelchair Service Provider (WSP) Certification and be part of our network of certified providers.

To participate in the training, please register and pay the fee (fees vary based on your home country and professional level) by 12th August 2022. Limited seats are available [total class strength is 20], and participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. More details on the fees structure is on the website.
