Wheelchair and Cushion Standards Group from the University of Pittsburgh

You are here:

The University of Pittsburgh Wheelchair and Cushion Standards Group, formed within the University of Pittsburgh Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology’s NIDILRR-funded Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC), seeks to actively translate national and international performance standards in a way that is understandable and effective for healthcare professionals, manufacturers, wheelchair users, researchers and policy makers to implement and call upon in daily practice.

The group’s website, wheelchairstandards.pitt.edu and accompanying LinkedIn platform were created to increase awareness, collaborate and spread information about wheelchair, caster and cushion performance in the forms of fact sheets, conference proceedings, publications and educational videos.

Most recently, the Group has launched an Interactive Cushion Performance Data Exploration Tool, found under the website’s “Explore Our Data” tab which allows users to:

1) explore independently generated cushion performance data,

2) compare cushion performance by broad cushion category and CMS code,

3) understand cushion performance relative to a reference foam cushion, and

4) explore individual cushion performance across a variety of tests.

The group frequently hosts events intended to make the information provided by wheelchair and cushion performance standards more accessible for wheelchair users, manufacturers, policy makers, researchers, and clinicians.
